I honestly can’t believe today is day one. It seems like these sixteen boys have been at camp forever, talking and laughing and playing like old friends. Even the rookies seem to fit right in; it doesn’t seem possible that I just met them today.
The first day of camp is pretty basic; there’s no parties or outings of any kind. We’re setting the schedule, getting the kids introduced to their coaches, and warming up the baseball skills. Despite this, the campers are already so excited. As I gave one new boy his ONE shirt this morning, he exclaimed, “We get SHIRTS?! This is gonna be awesome!” Kid, if only you knew just how awesome.
Beyond their enthusiasm, the thing that has already blown me away about the 2017 campers is their generosity. From holding doors to helping carry things, sharing snacks they brought to coloring pictures for staff out of their new coloring books, there’s always someone ready and willing to help. Even though they may have gone through all sorts of rough situations, they’re still kind, caring kids, there to back up whichever camper needs them. Our huddles today were about teamwork, and I feel like the boys have already got it down. They’re all on the same team, and I’m so glad I get to be part of it.
